چکیده

Vortices have been postulated at a range of size scales in the universe including at the stellar size-scale. Whilst hydrodynamically simulating the wind from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star moving through and sweeping up its surrounding interstellar medium (ISM), we have found vortices on the size scale of 10 pc to 10 pc in the wake of the star. These vortices appear to be the result of instabilities at the head of the bow shock formed upstream of the AGB star. The instabilities peel off downstream and form vortices in the tail of AGB material behind the bow shock, mixing with the surrounding ISM. We suggest such structures are visible in the planetary nebula Sh 2-188. Subject headings: hydrodynamics – turbulence – stars: AGB and post-AGB – circumstellar matter – ISM: structure – stars: mass-loss

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Circumstellar molecular line emission from S-type AGB stars: Mass-loss rates and SiO abundances

Aims. The main aim is to derive reliable mass-loss rates and circumstellar SiO abundances for a sample of 40 S-type AGB stars based on new multi-transitional CO and SiO radio line observations. In addition, the results are compared to previous results for M-type AGB stars and carbon stars to look for trends with chemical type. Methods. The circumstellar envelopes are assumed to be spherically s...

The Element Abundances in Bare Planetary Nebula Central Stars and the Shell Burning in AGB Stars

We review the observed properties of extremely hot hydrogen-deficient post-AGB stars of spectral type [WC] and PG1159. Their H-deficiency is probably caused by a (very) late heliumshell flash or a AGB final thermal pulse, laying bare interior stellar regions which are usually kept hidden below the hydrogen envelope. Thus, the photospheric element abundances of these stars allow to draw conclusi...

Nucleosynthesis in metal-poor AGB stars

We present detailed abundance results concerning CEMP (Carbon Enhanced Metal-Poor) stars and the various subclasses. Statistical arguments from radial velocity monitoring show that these stars are all binaries and have mass transferred from a former AGB. Therefore these stars are the direct witnesses of the nucleosynthesis production of the first low and intermediate mass stars. To put CEMP sta...

Current models for the evolution of AGB stars

While the basic properties of AGB stellar evolution are well established, comprehensive observational studies of late phases of intermediate mass stars continue to generate puzzles for current stellar models. Here, I review current techniques to model AGB stars, and I discuss important aspects of current research of AGB (and post-AGB) stellar evolution with a particular focus on how these inter...
